Short movable phrases where the chords and the melody move together.

Why you'll love it...

Chords and melody as one thing

The whole premise is reducing the separation between a chord grip and a melodic idea, so harmony stops being shapes and melody stops being something you add on top.

Deliberately bite-sized

Tim built these for players who want modest material: short bits you can get your fingers on in a sitting, rather than another long study you never finish.

Movable by design

Every phrase is built to shift. Learn it in C, move it to D, and the same idea keeps working, which is what turns an example into vocabulary.

What's inside

  • 10 short workouts, around 30 minutes in total
  • Movable ii-V-I phrases that blend chords and melody
  • Examples worked through in the key of C
  • The same material carried across into the key of D
  • Altered dominant colors, including 7โ™ฏ9 and 7โ™ญ9
  • Changing a single melody note to change the whole chord
  • Bass note movement underneath a held idea
  • Short enough to practice one workout in a sitting

Is this for you?

Yes, ifโ€ฆ

  • You comp and solo as separate activities and want them joined
  • You want short material you can actually finish
  • You know your ii-V-I shapes and want to make them sing
  • You play solo or duo and cover harmony and melody at once

Maybe not, ifโ€ฆ

  • You want a full course with a long arc
  • You are new to seventh chords and ii-V-I progressions
  • You are looking for single-note soloing lines

Where these came from...

These started life as material for Tim’s chordal improvisation class that never made it into the class. Pages of short examples, written up and set aside, until it became obvious they worked better on their own than as part of something larger.

His own description of who they suit is worth repeating: players looking for more modest material, short little bits of things you can get your fingers on. That is an unusually honest pitch, and it is accurate.

The idea underneath

Everything here is built to reduce the separation between chord grips and melodic ideas. Most guitarists keep those in different compartments: chords are shapes you hold, melody is something you play over the top. The workouts treat them as one motion, where the top voice moves and the harmony follows it, or the bass shifts underneath a held idea and changes what the chord means.

How it runs

Ten workouts, roughly thirty minutes in total. The examples run through the key of C first, then the same thinking is carried into D, which is where you find out whether you learned the idea or just the fingering. Along the way there are altered dominant colors, sharp nine and flat nine sitting a melody note apart, and small bass movements that recolor a chord without changing the grip.

Nothing here takes long. That is the point of it.

Questions, answered

Do I need to read music?

No. Everything is demonstrated on the guitar, phrase by phrase. The workouts are short enough to learn by watching and copying, though being able to follow a chord chart makes it easier.

Is this a course or a set of exercises?

Closer to exercises, and deliberately so. There is no long arc to follow. Each workout is a self-contained phrase or pair of phrases you can learn in a sitting and take straight into your playing.

What level is this pitched at?

Intermediate. You should already know your ii-V-I shapes and be comfortable moving between seventh chords across the neck. The material is short, but it does assume you can already hold the harmony down without thinking about it.

Is this included in the membership?

Yes. It sits in the Workshop library, so members already have it along with everything else. Buying it here is for players who want this one set of workouts outright rather than taking on a membership.
