Colin Montoya-Lewis started the topic Tuning, string gauge. in the forum Questions & Advice
I’ve recently lightened my string gauge, and I’m finding it difficult to play with a light enough touch to avoid sharp notes in chords in the bottom strings. I understand I could simply return to the heavier gauge, but I think I prefer the lighter gauge for bending, and I’m leaning more toward jazz/blues than jazz. In addition to changing gauge,…Read More

Thank you Richard. That’s helpful. I bought a set of round “heavy bottom/skinny top” (10-52), but I haven’t put the on yet. I suspect I won’t end up using those. I have managed to adjust my finger pressure over the last couple days, resulting in less of a sharp note issue, but, 10s just feel a bit too mushy, even if I can manage to play in…Read More

I use D’Adarrio 11-50 roundwound this is the “balanced Tension “set EXL115BT. you might find its a nice middle ground. also good for you to lighten your touch rather than searching for solutions outside of yourself. its often best to work on mind/body control as a first stop . Tim

Thanks Tim. So far, a set of Ernie Ball 11-48 have come the closest to what feels right in my experiments, and that seems very close to the ones you mention. I will give the D’Adarrios a try, too, though, as I’ve always had good luck with that brand. And, yes, agreed, regarding the place to start being to learn to better control my touch.

Autumn Leaves.
Don’t know how many of you have seen this video. It’s 10 different jazz guitar players interpreting Autumn Leaves. Tim’s performance is at the 14:30 minute mark. There are some pretty cool things to learn here and many that are way over the top. Enjoy! -
Here’s a video of All The Things You Are. One chorus with the melody and a second chorus with walking bass and comping. I’ve been wanting to work on this type of playing and welcome any feedback.

I was trying to upload a video in mp4 format but kept getting error messages. Is there a specific way to share video of my playing?

The total tension of a set of Daddario 11-50 flat wound is around 137 Lbs vs 122 Lbs for a set of 11-50 round wound. So technically for the same string gauge, a set of rounds is lighter than a set of flats. I’ve tried them both on my Telecaster and round wounds feel definitely lighter/more bendable than flat wounds. Tone wise I prefer flat…Read More
