• Here’s home recording of But Beautiful with my friend Jerry A on upright bass. We tried to keep it simple and I like how it turned out.

Part of our focus on the session was experimenting with technique for recording the bass. I placed two condenser mics near his bridge (one cardioid and one omni). But he also had a pickup (piezo) on his b…Read More

    • The link to the recording seems to have disappeared from the above post, so I’ll try again. It’s an M4A audio file.

    • super enjoyable to listen to, thanks for sharing this! sometimes I forget that music doesn’t need every theoretical device under the sun to be meaningful and musical. listening to others’ playing reminds me that expressive playing, even when “simple”, is what’s more important

      • Thanks Anton. “Super enjoyable” is what I’m shooting for, so that’s good to hear. I like to study & practice chord voicings & substitutions, but I try to be driven by my ear mor than theory when I’m playing. Sometimes my ear takes me off the rails though!

    • Sounds great Kirk! Was your guitar a direct input too?

      • Thanks John. That’s my Eastman AR810CE into my Princeton/Deluxe hybrid (with your Raytheon 6V6GTs!) to a CAD M179 mic set to cardioid, to my Zoom H8. The amp is a bit hissy, partly because I was playing at living room volume, but I wonder if a resistor is getting noisy.

  • Tim and all. This popped up on my YT feed today. I certainly understand Joe Diorio’s influence on your playing. What a teacher.

This time I first recorded the solo part, then switched to accompaniment to record a second guitar for another few rounds. It’s a little rough, but there’s a lot…Read More

    • This is great Erik. You are getting it! This is exactly what you have to do, experiment, succeed, fall short, the whole spectrum as you developed the necessary control of the altered sound and its resolution. Well done keep it up.
