• The hardest part of this jazz journey for me is finding others to play with; to share the art of sound and camaraderie; to learn together.

I live in San Jose CA. The Bay Area is huge. Logistics are not the easiest, but maybe we could find time to occasionally get together and play. I worked as an `ukulele teacher at a music store in Los Gatos…Read More

  • I started as a volunteer guitar teacher at the local Senior Citizen Center. Very interesting – you learn what you teach.

    • That must be so rewarding…nice one Steve

    • Teaching is so rewarding. I’m trying to do more myself.

      • Teaching helps me to be involved with other people. On Fridays I volunteer at the Senior Center playing harp in the art class. I like having a positive visibility in the community.

        • I love it! That’s wonderful! World needs more of that mindset.

        • These are such heartening and rewarding activities, Steve, and I am sure you bring joy to others. I enjoyed being in a Celtic folk group for a few years, playing regularly at an Aged Care Centre. Two harps, recorders, acoustic bass and acoustic guitar. Here’s a photo from 2016.

          • Hi Marion. Yes harps go good with guitars, recorders and flutes too. When I played at the hospital our harp circle did a Christmas concert every December in the main lobby. That’s me playing bass recorder. I would just play the melody, nothing difficult. Do you know the books of arrangements by Suzanne Guldiman? That’s what I use for harp playing.

            • You’re a man of many instruments and talents, Steve! I was the guitarist and singer in the Celtic folk group, and have never tried playing the harp. I haven’t heard the harpists in the group mention Suzanne Guldiman, and will ask them next time I see them. I loved playing guitar with the harps, and all the instruments. There are some beautiful…Read More

          • The Suzanne guldiman books aren’t celtic tunes. They are Victorian Christmas carols that aren’t played any more, so they are not recognizable as holiday tunes, Elizabethan, Old English and Early music. All very simple. Is O’Carolan harp music what you played? I played guitar in a duet with a harpist for a while.

            • We played at least a few O’Carolan songs; Planxty Irwin, Si Bheag Si Mhor, Fanny Power, Morgan’s Magon. We played a wide repertoire of traditional and contemporary folk songs. Some of my favourites: Caledonia by Dougie MacLean, Fields of Gold (Sting), The Foggy Dew, Imagine (Beatles), Loch Lomond, Scarborough Fair / Greensleeves medley, Skye Boat…Read More

          • I haven’t looked at the old duet repertoire book for years. we played Fanny Power and The Rose of Trallee. When I play harp I take lots of liberties. I use what is written as a point of departure. Everything pretty much sounds good on a harp! When playing solo you can really do whatever you want. I don’t play with any other musicians right…Read More

            • Nice to reminisce about my folk group days. Playing music with other people is great to do. The Jazz Guitar Camp sounds like a good opportunity. Enjoy!

            • One last photo showing our Celtic folk group soon after we started playing together in Feb 2016. You can see the instruments in action. 🙂

    • Hey Christopher, just checking in to see if it’s still acting up for you. (Just got back from overseas.)

  • There and Back Again..
A little medley of my Tom Waits arrangements using the key modulation mentioned a few weeks back on a livestream D-C-D. Not sure it’s that smooth but I think my ears is getting there..
